We Were Soldiers: The Screenplay
by Randall Wallace

On November 14, 1965 in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam, 400 men from the U.S. 7th Cavalry under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore were dropped into a small clearing known as Landing Zone X-Ray. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 enemy soldiers. The ensuing battle was one of the most savage in U.S. history.Twenty-eight years later, Randall Wallace came across Hal Moore and Joe Galloway's battlefield memoir, We Were Soldiers Once … and Young. He was struck by a line in the prologue, "Hollywood got it (the story of American soldiers in Vietnam) wrong every damned time..." Wallace read the book and vowed to adapt Moore and Galloway's story into a film, and "get it right".

This unique book offers a facsimile of the film's shooting script, its cuts and changes, scene notes, photos, storyboards, correspondence, and an exclusive interview with director/screenwriter Randall Wallace.
