A Jane Doe floating in Lake Hollywood-an apparent suicide who died wearing a crucifix around her neck, and a still-living victim-a businessman's daughter kidnapped by a dealer and held as a hostage of the L.A.-Mexico drug trade are the cases facing Detectives Thomas Ridge and Scarlett McCullers, the most brilliant and driven cops in the L.A.P.D.'s special homicide division. Ridge and McCullers are thrown together into an odd partnership, wrestling their separate obsessions, trying not to notice the attraction between them-and trying not to get blown away in the first blasts of a drug war.
