"We Were Soldiers" lands in top ten for fifth straight weekApril 1, 2002 - "We Were Soldiers" brought in $3.5 million over this past weekend, slipping just 38% from the previous weekend. We Were Soldiers Once... And Young #1 on NY Times Bestseller ListMarch 15, 2002 - "We Were Soldiers Once... And Young", the Vietnam battlefield memoir written by Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore (Ret.) and Joseph Galloway, and the basis for the film "We Were Soldiers" is currently #1 on the New York Times Paperback Nonfiction Bestseller List. During its initial release in 1993, this books spent a number of weeks on various bestseller lists.
"We Were Soldiers" breaks box office recordMarch 4, 2002 - (Excerpts from 3/4/02 Daily Variety)- Paramount's Mel Gibson starrer "We Were Soldiers" captured the weekend box office with an estimated frame-record gross of $20.2 million. Industrywide, the session's $101 million in total estimated grosses was a 13% uptick from the same weekend a year ago, according to data from B.O. tracker ACNielsen EDI. For Gibson, the "Soldiers" bow represents his eighth-best opening. Gibson's personal best remains 1996's "Ransom,' which debuted at $34.2 million. Paramount loaded a particularly powerful third-day estimate in its weekend maneuvers for "Soldiers," because 73% of enlisted auds were over age 25 -- a demo more likely to storm theaters on a Sunday. If estimate holds up, the picture will best a previous frame record set by DreamWorks' Julia Roberts-Brad Pitt starrer "The Mexican" over the first weekend of March last year. "Soldiers," a Vietnam War drama, reps the latest of several military pics to unspool since America went to war with the Taliban in Afghanistan. It's performance was roughly in line with pre-release expectations. Paramount distribution topper Wayne Lewellen said "Soldiers" -- produced for more than $70 million -- should march to a domestic run of $80 million-$100 million. He also cited strong grosses in smaller markets as reason for optimism.
"We Were Soldiers" screened for President Bush and other government officialsFebruary 27, 2002 - Director/Writer/Producer Randall Wallace and actor Mel Gibson were at the White House on Tuesday night to show President Bush their new Vietnam war movie, "We Were Soldiers." The fact-based movie, which opens Friday, is about a 3 day battle in the remote Ia Drang Valley in the central highlands of South Vietnam in November 1965. It was the first major encounter between North Vietnamese and American soldiers, and the 400 troops of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, played by Gibson, were outnumbered by the 2,000 North Vietnamese. Moore, now a retired lieutenant general, was at the White House as well along with Joseph Galloway, the reporter who saw the battle and who co-wrote with Moore the book that inspired the movie, "We Were Soldiers Once and Young." Gibson told reporters on his way into the White House that Moore and Galloway helped give him a picture of what war is like, since he has never served in combat himself. "I was certainly allowed to have a very, very personal look at war, at battle, at the human spirit, at courage, and they were generous enough to do it through their eyes," Gibson said. Vice-President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice were among those attending the showing in the White House movie theater.
